In 2018, OTELCO published forty-six blog posts, with subjects ranging from fiber rollouts to Facebook breaches. With every post, we did our best to create content that was relevant to all of our customers. Sometimes we wrote about residential issues, like how to outsmart your smart devices, and other times we stuck to business subjects, like managing business technology. This year we even had the chance to highlight some of our most unique customers, like the Harris’s who own Pumpkin Valley Farm.
It is always interesting to see which blogs our readers responded to the most. Now that the year is coming to a close, we want to take a look back at OTELCO’s top three blogs of 2018. Take this chance to look them over, to see what made them each so popular.
New Smart TV? 4 Steps to Streaming TV Online
Smart TV’s were a big gift in 2017 because a lot of people were ready to make the switch from cable to streaming. This blog provides four easy steps to cutting the cable, and embracing online entertainment:
- Determine Your TV Needs: Everyone wants different things from their television experience. Maybe you care more about sports than movies? Are you ready to drop all network television? Finding out exactly what you want to watch will enable you to create your perfect viewing experience.
- Know What Streaming Service is Right for You: There are a lot of different streaming services out there right now. Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime are certainly the three big ones, but depending on your answer to question one, you might need a little more than just basic streaming.
- Determine if You Need a Streaming Device: If you don’t have a Smart TV, there are still a lot of great devices that will allow you to stream TV. Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, and Apply TV are three of the big ones, but every day a new streaming device hits the market. A lot of your favorite gaming consoles also offer viewing options, like the X-Box or PS3.
- Figure out How Much Speed You Need: No matter what service or device you choose, it is going to affect your internet speed. OTELCO’s Internet calculator can help you determine just how fast your Internet needs to be to accommodate your streaming devices.
This is just a preview of what is a very helpful and thorough post. If you have any questions about SmartTV’s or online streaming, you should read the full version here.

The post profiled:
All four of these restaurants had delicious food and even better service. To learn about what made each of them so special, read the full blog here.
Municipal Broadband Networks Are Not a Threat to the First Amendment
Back in October, FCC commissioner Mike O’Rielly made a statement condemning Municipal Networks on the grounds of Free Speech infringement. O’Rielly felt that, by setting Acceptable Use Policies for their municipal-owned broadband networks, local governments were engaging in “significant first amendment mischief.” As a strong proponent and provider of Municipal Broadband, OTELCO questioned Commissioner O’Rielly’s statements. We believe that Municipal Broadband Networks have every right to issue Acceptable use policies, and we do not think they are a threat to the First Amendment.
OTELCO felt so strongly about the commissioner’s statement that we were compelled to write an in-depth blog on the subject. If you would like to read about why OTELCO stands with municipalities in this matter, you can read the full post here.
