Statewide Survey Seeks to Better Understand the Importance of Broadband in Maine

The Telecommunications Association of Maine (TAM) has teamed up with Consolidated Communications and The Island Institute to conduct a statewide survey to understand the importance of broadband in Maine. The Telecommunications Association of Maine (TAM) has teamed up with Consolidated Communications and The Island Institute to conduct a statewide survey to understand the usage, needs, and importance of broadband in Maine. TAM, along with its rural telecommunications provider members, like OTELCO, is dedicated to promoting affordable voice and Internet services in rural Maine.

The survey asks residents and businesses from all regions of Maine about the importance of Internet-dependent pursuits, such as telecommuting, aging in place, pursuing professional development activities, telemedicine and accessing a skilled workforce. TAM also seeks to understand the barriers (i.e. cost, lack of providers, lack of speed) for rural Mainers who are currently “underserved” and lack access to high-speed broadband Internet access.

Why does it matter?

Since our earliest days, we’ve been committed to providing rural communities with the tools they need to stay connected. At OTELCO, we know the importance of reliable connectivity, and we find resources like this survey to be valuable tools in determining how we can best serve our communities.

There is a statewide conversation surrounding broadband connectivity happening right now, and all Mainers have the option to make their voice heard. This survey is an opportunity to share your opinion about the importance of broadband in Maine.

What happens next?

TAM plans to use the findings of this research to develop new communications strategies that support its mission of promoting the use and development of telephone and communication services.

Like OTELCO, TAM is focused on investing in a rural future and promoting reliable and affordable Internet access for all corners of our state. Survey findings will help us understand the current need for broadband in Maine, and where we can direct our focus moving forward.

The survey will be available online at www.tamnet.org/broadband-survey throughout May 2019.
