Through a collaboration with the Old Town – Orono Fiber Corporation (OTO Fiber), this major fiber broadband initiative includes the construction of approximately 49 miles of Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) network in portions of Old Town and Orono, as well as OTELCO providing service on approximately 6 miles of network that OTO Fiber has already constructed.  The network will provide symmetrical Gigabit speeds with the existing 6 miles serving the first 400+/- locations this fall.  The portion of the network that OTELCO will construct will serve approximately 3,155 more locations and is scheduled to be in service by summer of 2022.  Interested residents can visit www.otelco.com/builds  to learn more and sign up for priority installations.

Belle Ryder, President of the OTO Fiber Corporation and Assistant Town Manager in Orono commented, “This project has been evolving for more than a decade, it’s so exciting to see the hard work of all those involved come to fruition.”

Jeff Letourneau is the Executive Director of Networkmaine, and Secretary of OTO Fiber Corp., and has been a tireless proponent for connectivity throughout Maine.  He said, “Getting the OTO Fiber network built and serving customers has been a long time coming, I’m thrilled that the day has arrived.”

“Connectivity is key to economic development.  For Old Town and Orono, this collaboration with OTELCO will help us see the community broadband vision become reality and allow us to concentrate on building our economic base”, commented E.J. Roach, Director of Economic and Community Development in Old Town and Vice President of OTO Fiber.

“This project is a great example of how public and private groups can come together to facilitate broadband expansion in a way that benefits all”, commented OTELCO CEO, Richard Clark.  Clark also encouraged residents to visit www.otelco.com/builds  to learn more and check availability for their location.  Should community interest indicate, OTELCO could consider expanding the build at a future date.

OTELCO has an interactive map to help Old Town and Orono residents see if their location is part of the build.  Visit www.otelco.com/builds/  to learn more and register to be among the first to get connected when the network is complete.  All Old Town and Orono residents are encouraged register even if they are not part of the initial project area.  Coverage may be expanded if there is an overwhelming response.
