OTELCO has received funding from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) Broadband Accessibility Fund (ABAF) to build Fiber to the Premise to Morgan City.
The grant provides $619,500 to augment an OTELCO investment of $1,150,500 that will deliver Fiber to the Premise (FTTP) to approximately 1,650 locations that are currently receiving speeds that do not meet the FCC standard of 25/3. The new technology provided by OTELCO will deliver speeds of 100 Mbps and 300 Mbps symmetrical and is expandable as demand increases.
Over the past 2 years, the ABAF has been funded a total of $27.4 million. During that same period, the state awarded $2,363,152.51 to projects with matching investment of $9,452,612.08 that brought service to nearly 3,300 hundred locations. In addition to a round of awards in March and May of this year, the state expects to issue a third round of awards in the coming months that will further grow those numbers.
“We are excited to receive these grant funds for fiber to the premise improvements in Morgan City,” commented Trevor Jones, OTELCO Vice President of Marketing and Customer Service. “It’s apparent that Alabama takes connectivity seriously, as evidenced by substantial funding of the ABAF, and we’re thankful for the State’s assistance in making the economics work for this community.”
